How financing through a contractor works

The loan is with the finance company, not the contractor, and the two we work with are set up differently.

Service Finance Company

Service Finance Company, LLC is a sales finance company that finances home improvements, roofing and siding included, for contractors enrolled in its program. Its FAQ describes an installment loan for a fixed amount with a fixed term, not a revolving line of credit. When the work is complete, you authorize payment, Service Finance pays the contractor, and you make your payments to Service Finance. It is on the Connecticut Department of Banking's list of sales finance company licensees (SFC-140908, list dated September 2, 2026).

Hearth

Hearth says it is a technology company that does not make loans or credit decisions. It connects homeowners with lending partners, which provide the rates, terms and fees. The money goes to the homeowner, who repays the lender.

Who approves the loan

The lender. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says that for a personal installment loan, most lenders set the rate and terms by looking at your credit score and reports, income, debts, and the amount and length of the loan, among other factors.

Contractor financing, home equity or a personal loan

How the CFPB describes the other ways to pay for a project:

OptionHow you get the moneyWhat to know
Home equity loanA lump sum, usually at a fixed rateYour home is the collateral; if you can't repay, the lender could foreclose.
Home equity line of credit (HELOC)Draws up to a limit during the draw periodUsually a variable rate; payments often jump once repayment starts, and falling behind could cost you your home.
Personal installment loanAll of the money at the startRepaid in set amounts over a set period; fees can add to the cost.
Personal line of credit or credit cardBorrowing up to a limit, based on your creditDoesn't use your home as collateral, but rates are often higher than options that do.

Most home equity loans and refinances can be canceled within three business days after closing; for these loans, Saturdays count as business days.

What to check before you sign a loan

Connecticut protections on a financed home improvement

Roofing or siding work on a home is a home improvement when the price is over $200 (CGS 20-419). The contract must be in writing and signed by you and the contractor, with the contractor's registration number, start and completion dates and notice of your cancellation rights, and you get a completed copy when you sign (CGS 20-429).

Each home improvement contract is treated as a home solicitation sale (CGS 20-429). You can cancel until midnight of the third business day after the transaction, not counting Saturdays, Sundays or legal holidays. If you cancel, the seller must refund your payments, return any promissory note you signed and cancel any security interest from the sale, such as a lien. And if a seller assigns your note to a finance company before midnight of the fifth business day after signing, the agreement is not effective against you (CGS 42-134a, 42-135a).

If the contract itself carries a finance charge, it must include Truth-in-Lending disclosures and let you pay it off early for a partial refund of the unearned finance charge (CGS 20-429). To check a lender's Connecticut license, the Department of Banking points consumers to NMLS Consumer Access.

Financing and an insurance claim

An insurance payment and a loan can pay for the same storm repair, but they stay separate: the claim is between you and your insurer, the loan between you and the lender. The Connecticut Insurance Department's claims guide says your deductible is the part of the claim you pay, and an actual cash value payment subtracts depreciation. The Department advises against signing over your insurance settlement payment and lists a contractor's offer to waive your deductible as a warning sign of a storm repair scam.

Our part: a free inspection, including storm and hail damage assessments; documentation and an estimate; meeting the adjuster on site if you ask; and the repair. Financing, with approved credit, is one way to pay what insurance doesn't, such as the deductible.

Sizing a roof or siding project before you apply

What a roof replacement costs depends on the roof: the material, the number of old layers torn off, the pitch, decking repairs, chimneys and skylights, and access all move the price, so we measure the roof and put the number in writing after a free inspection. To get started, enter your address on our free roof estimate page: we measure the roof from aerial imagery, and a representative walks you through the numbers. For siding, see our siding page and ask for a free, no-obligation exterior inspection.

Common questions about roof and siding financing

Do you offer financing for a new roof or siding?

Yes. We offer financing with approved credit through Service Finance Company and Hearth for roofing and siding projects. The lender makes the credit decision, and you repay the lender, not Stallion Ridge.

Can I finance a roof with bad credit?

The lender decides, not the contractor. The CFPB says most lenders weigh your credit score and reports, income, debts, and the amount and length of the loan when setting a personal loan's rate and terms.

What is deferred interest on a financing promotion?

It means you pay no interest only if you pay the full balance by the end of the promotional period. If you don't, the CFPB explains, you owe all the interest back to the original date of the charge.

Is a home equity loan or HELOC better than contractor financing?

It depends on the offers. A home equity loan or HELOC uses your home as collateral, so you could lose your home if you can't repay. Compare the APR and fees of each offer before you choose.

Can I cancel a financed home improvement contract in Connecticut?

Yes, until midnight of the third business day after the transaction, not counting Saturdays, Sundays or legal holidays. The seller must then refund your payments, return any promissory note you signed and cancel any security interest from the sale (CGS 42-135a).
